The Buoyancy of Life

Ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels, really fast? Yet, remain in the same place?

Or at least that’s how it feels because you’re so embedded in making something out of an idea, while the micro-changes are not seen.

Working somewhat hard — at times smart — at making something out of nothing come to fruition, I trudge forward because that is what I have been taught to do, and that is what I have done for most of my adult life. Yet, there are moments when disappointment settles in.

Feeling a little adrift, I engaged in a bit of escapism (engrossing myself in the Netflix series Another Self and One Day).

Not desiring to exert too much effort, I maintained daily walks, morning journaling sessions, and time with good friends (in person or virtually).

After a few weeks of drifting, entering a space of slowing down, refocusing, and re-regulating, my energy shifted, opening to a reflective space questioning my expectations.

Were they from a myopic viewpoint? Biased? Not fully formed considering the realities and complexities of the systems I am in?

What was I missing?

Dealing with a life shift—in this case, saying goodbye to a toxic team while moving towards cultivating a meaningful and supportive work environment—stirred up a whirlwind of emotions. And a lot of expectations.

Pleased to no longer be a member of a toxic team and working towards being in a supportive environment was exciting, yet life has its own timeline. And after seven months of trying to find that next landing spot, a sense of disappointment set in.

Excitement shifted to a sense of dread.

Review, Release, And Renew

The buoyancy of life often provides us with insights into what might be needed to get ashore when we are adrift (or sinking in quicksand).

The hard truth is seeing clearly when our expectations do not align with reality; it can be difficult. In those moments, a sense of overwhelm might set in, and retreating temporarily to regroup and see what might be next with a clearer heart/mind is what’s called for.

Revisiting 2024 intentions, I set to:

  1. Grow BETA Coaching & Consulting.
  2. Continue to cultivate my relationships.
  3. Continue to nurture my sense of self (being) — by embodying my word of the year (refractions — entering the prism of myself — to bend, reshape and color anew) was a perspective re-set.

This realization invited an energy shift, magnifying what is valued to feel grounded in the magic of possibility.

When you reflect on the year so far, what will you celebrate that you have learned and grown from? How are you stepping into your full power and shine?

Even the most (un)welcomed changes come with their challenges. Check out BETA’s LinkedIn post on the courage of change.
